More about the chemical composition of the Butterfly Pea Flower plant (Clitoria Ternatea)

The chemical composition of butterfly pea plants includes various compounds. The leaves and seeds are used as a blue dye. The leaves contain astragalin (Kaempferol-3-glucoside), Kaempferol-3-rutinoside, clitorin, triterpenoid compounds, alkaloids, gamma-lactone, aparajitin, and xanthone-lactone. When aparajitin oxidizes, it forms arachidic acid and beta-methylglutamic acid. The stem bark and seeds contain some toxic alkaloids.

The seed oil contains oleic acid, linoleic acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, arachidic acid, and gamma-sitosterol. The root bark contains starch, tannins, resins, and bitter resin in the seeds, along with tannic acid, glucose, and cotyledon. The seeds also contain amino acids like leucine, isoleucine, valine, adenine, glycine, arginine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid, and tyrosine.
